Severodvinsk-based Sevmash Shipyard in Arkhangelsk Region will start on December 22 construction of a fourth Borei-class long-range nuclear submarine (project 955), the company said today.
The firm is reportedly building three more submarines of the same type, including the Yury Dolgoruky, the Alexander Nevsky, and the Dmitry Monomakh, all of which being in different stages of completion. The provisional name for the fourth one is Nicholas the Sanctifier, the company said.
Under the RF Navy’s plans, the 955-project long-range subs will be a major component of Russia’s maritime nuclear efforts after 2018, following the retirement of the currently operative Typhoon, Delta-3 and Delta-4 submarines.
This submarine class is reportedly equipped with missiles, up to ten warheads each, capable of suppressing antiballistic missile systems.
The cost of the Yury Dolgoruky is a reported $767m. The new sub will probably cost around that much.
