A number of cars brought into Russia by individuals through Far Eastern customs dropped 4.4 times in January - February on a year-on-year basis from 17,400 to 3,900 vehicles, RIA Novosti reported today, citing Far Eastern customs sources.
Passenger car and truck imports by companies also fell by 2.3 times on a year-on-year basis from 40,000 to 17,000, the sources added.
The RF government’s Dec. 10, 2008 decree on higher import duties on foreign cars and trucks took effect January 12, 2009.
Russian officials believe it is a measure to protect domestic manufacturers and international car makers operating out of Russia.
