Sakhalin in for $6.2m terminal at Korsakov

23 Jan '09
Sakhalin authorities plan construction of a modern passenger terminal next to the Korsakov sea port, Kommersant reported today citing sources in the regional administration.

A minimum price tag of the terminal with the capacity of 250 passengers is estimated by the sources in the administration at $6.2m. More will be required to equip the place, they said.

It is expected that the commissioning of the new terminal will render break-even todays Korsakov Wakkanai ferry line, the only one to connect Russia and Japan, local officials said.

The existing terminal has been in the red as it falls short of passengers most basic expectations.
