Tele2 in $200m-300m plans for GSM in Siberia

5 Jan '09
Swedish telecom Tele2 has announced $200m-300m plans to roll out commercial GSM services in Novosibirsk and Tomsk regions.

Regional managing director Damir Timershin told Interfax the service would begin "roughly in the middle of 2009", adding the final date would be decided in Q1 2009.

Spokesman Sergei Andriyashkin said the move was part of wider plans to launch GSM networks in 17 regions of Russia in 2009-10, including 9-12 in 2009.

Karelia, Volgograd, Tambov, Ryazan, Tula and Kaluga are among regions where the firm is expected to move in.

As we reported at the time, Tele2 announced in October 2008 plans to set up networks in Krasnodar and Kalingrad.
