Sanoma Oyj and Viadeo will launch professional social network

Russian division of Finland publishing house Sanoma Oyj will launch a professional social network, Gazeta.RU reports.

The project partner is the French company Viadeo, competing with LinkedIn.

Under the partners plans, the whole network, including its local services, will be available in Russia language. In Russia the project will start working In early 2012.

Viadeo is developing network services for professional communities, and makes money on services on HR, advertisement and the recipient base. Viadeo and Sanoma own the project on the parity basis. Financial details of cooperation have yet to be disclosed.

The publishing house Sanoma Independent Media (SIM) issues about 50 publications, including magazines Cosmopolitan, Grazia, Men’s Health, newspaper Vedomosti.

According to Elena Myasnikov, cited by The Wall Street Journal, “In the next several years Russian will become the largest media-market in Europe.”

“The Russian market in the main driver for Viadeo’s growth,” Dan Serfaty, the head of the French company, agrees. Under his calculations, in 2012 the network will have 2 million Russian users.

The partnership will help Viadeo to strengthen positions in its competition with LinkedIn for users that don’t speak English, particularly, in Italy and France. The company is currently expanding in India, Brazil and China. Its websites are used by 40 million people.

The number of LinkedIn users totaled 135 million in November. The network is available in Russian, Japanese, Portuguese and Indonesian languages. Experts note that LinkedIn is popular mainly among office employees, posting information in English language. Users of Viadeo, yielding main revenues in Europe, use local languages. According to Serfaty, the company became profitable in 2009 and is currently actively expanding. Under plans, next year the company will grow a number of its employees by 100. Viadeo at the moment has 350 workers.
