Siberian physicists keep up global collaboration

14 Jan '16
The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN, based in Switzerland) and the Novosibirsk-based Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics hope to conduct an experiment at the end of this year to develop a new generation of accelerators, reported, citing Konstantin Lotov, a senior research fellow at the Siberian think-tank.

The future experiment will aim to prove for the first time in history that protons can be used to excite a plasma wave which would accelerate particles to a speed that exceeds that in conventional accelerators by a factor of ten.

With that achieved accelerators which are now 1,000 meters long could be reduced to 10-15 meters. That may lead to the development of a compact source of synchrotron radiation for a wide range of applications, from medicine to material science, to metalwork.

In addition, according to RT, Budker Institute researchers have plans to develop and offer the rest of the world what they claim will be a commercially more attractive alternative to conventional thermonuclear reactor efforts.

The Institute is said to be creating a new method of controlling thermonuclear plasma with the use of whats known in nuclear physics as open traps, Alexander Ivanov, the Institute deputy director for research, was quoted as saying.

In fact, were developing a new branch of science which we hope will lead to the development of a commercially viable thermonuclear reactor. Its currently far from clear if the tokamak is the best option for a commercial reactor. This raises doubt, as the tokamak has a number of parameters that are completely unacceptable for this, Mr. Ivanov said.
