Siberians develop diagnostics for international nuclear fusion experiment

28 Aug '13
The Novosibirsk Institute of Nuclear Physics is expected to develop diagnostic equipment for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported earlier this week, quoting a statement by Anatoly Krasilnikov, the director of ITERs Russian division.

ITER is the worlds first international thermonuclear research effort, currently building in the south of France the worlds largest experimental tokamak nuclear fusion reactor. The project has brought together the EU countries, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia, and the United States.

The Institute of Nuclear Physics has undertaken to develop and manufacture equipment for internal diagnostics. The gear has to be developed here and then assembled complete with other equipment from our partners, Mr. Krasilnikov explained. The Russian specialists are tasked with making a reported 19 high-tech systems for the future unit.

According to the official, the Siberian think-tank will be working on the diagnostic equipment for five-to-seven years in close interaction with the ITER project partners from other countries, he emphasized.

The Russian area of the project will be funded from federal coffers, he added. The Institute expects a government allocation of $1.5m by the end of this year.

The ITER project aims to demonstrate the principle of generating apparently inexhaustible, safe and environmentally nonhazardous energy.
