DNA diagnostics lab to open in Vladivostok

1 Aug '12
A DNA diagnostics lab is being established in Vladivostok on the premises of Far East Federal University (FEFU), RIA Novosti reports citing a source in the Primorsky regional administration who added other scientists from across Primorsky would also contribute.

The lab, to be stationed at FEFU, will become the first in Russia’s Far East to engage in determining the role and magnitude of genetic susceptibility to infectious and hereditary diseases, the source says. The new facility will also reportedly provide medical consulting in genetics for local populations.

The project has been developed in partnership with the Far East branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Primorsky lab and analytics center.

With state-of-the-art equipment to be used for the lab Russia’s Far East will have its own next gen pyrosequencing technology. The methodology enables faster study of short DNA fragments’ nucleotide sequence. The fragments determine a person’s susceptibility to hereditary diseases.

Such diseases include, but are not limited to, cardiovascular and oncologic diseases, lipidic metabolism disorders, miscarriages, prediabetes and susceptibility to obesity.

According to the Primorsky regional administration, the new methodology also speeds up the diagnostics process significantly; results will be reportedly available “within a couple of hours” instead of three-to-five days in current facilities using conventional methodologies. “This high-speed and high-accuracy technology will help pinpoint potential genetic risks for infectious and multifactorial disorders, diagnose those at early stages, and forecast clinical courses,” the source concludes.
