In Tomsk, key anti-infectious drug ingredient production eyed

25 Aug '11
Tomsk State University (TSU) and Biisk-based federal Altai R&D center have launched a joint innovation project aimed at developing Russiaís own technology and production of 2-methylimidazoleóa key ingredient to make glyoxal-based anti-infectious drugs, portal UNOVA reports.

According to the Tomsk regional administration, the project requires an estimated $5.2m in investment.

Alexei Knyazev, head of TSUís catalytic research lab, was quoted as saying, ďsince we launched in 2009 Tomsk-based glyoxal production using out technology we have been shooting for a project like this. We are Russiaís only to have completed the development of 2-methylimidazole production technology and are now aiming to try its commercial production. Russia doesnít make enough of its own raw material for pharma substances, and our joint effort with Altai could eventually make a considerable difference in the domestic pharmaceutical market.Ē

TSU has reportedly brought on board for this project a number of Tomskís innovative SMEs like Aldopharma that spun off from the university in 2009. The project is also supported by the Medicine of the Future technology platform created by Siberian State Medical University, the source added.

The efforts should result in pilot 2-methylimidazole production with a capacity of up to 100 tons a year. To facilitate the process the project owners are said to be preparing labs and developing a marketing strategy.

Russiaís sizable pharmaceutical companies have shown interest in the project, the source emphasized.
