Siberian scientist make paracetamol store well in pills

The specialists from the Science and Research Center “Molecular Design and Ecologically Safe Technologies” in Novosibirsk State University, and researchers from the Nikolayev Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Institute of Solid Body Chemistry and Mechanochemistry, Lavrentyev Institute of Hydrodynamics and Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian branch (SB) of the Russian Academy of Science (RAS), are working on the problem of getting a paracetamol pharmaceutical form that could be storable and at the same time would be easy to be pressed into pills, science and technology portal STRF.ru reports.

The scientist suggested to press the medicine into pills through sublimation dehydration of frozen solutions of the substance in acetone – water compounds.

The project has been supported by the Base Research and Higher Education (BRHE) program of the US Civilian R&D Foundation, the program “Fundamental Sciences for Medicine” of the RAS Presidium, the program “Nanomaterials” of the RAS Presidium and integration projects of the SB RAS.

The highly-dispersed paracetamol is pressed into pills much better that normal drug. The obtained pill is easily detached from the cylinder, while in the traditional technology the pill sticks to the cylinder and, in order to avoid its sticking, the drug is supplemented with various substances facilitating sliding, such as magnesium stearate.

The highly-dispersed paracetamol is easier pressed thanks to high surface energy of particles due to large surface area. The pills, received from the powder, are more solid than those, obtained from customer reagent, and, when destroyed, don’t crumble but fall into several pieces.

The pills, made by Novosibirsk scientists, combine in themselves tolerance to storing, high mechanic endurance and good bioavailability of the drug. The researchers believe that thanks to the new method, based on sublimation dehydration of frozen substances, prepared from combined water-organic solutions, it will be easy to obtain pills and other pharmaceutical drugs with improved characteristics.
