In Urals, researchers work to improve gold extraction tech

Researchers at the Ural Federal University (UrFU) have identified mechanisms of precious metal production chemistry after they studied earlier this year the kinetics of arsenopyrite leaching in nitric acid solutions in the presence of pyrite and iron ions. Both carried gold microparticles.

Results that followed appear important as gold producers seek to improve the technology of extracting the precious metal from ores.

The team looked into how acid and pyrite concentrations and granule sizes impacted the extraction process at different temperatures. Effect was found positive with a thirty degree increase in temperature and a 15% rise in nitric acid concentration.

The data obtained will help enrich the known fundamentals of oxidizing such materials that are part of mining ores to be processed both in Russia and across the world, with environmental factors taken into account to minimize pollution, said Denis Rogozhnikov, PhD, of UrFUs nonferrous metallurgy chair.
