Chelyabinsk region included into federal nuclear medicine program

Chelyabinsk region has become the fourth region in Russia, included into the federal program of development of nuclear medicine, the website of the Commission on Modernization and Technological Development of Economy of Russia reports.
The agreement was reportedly signed by the head of Rosatom and the government of Chelyabinsk region in the town of Snezhinsk.
Nuclear medicine, first of all, deals with methods of diagnostics and treatment of cardiology, oncology, neurology and endocrinology diseases. The region does have equipment for such treatments, however, this equipment is outdated.
In order to lower risks of ray therapy effects of patient health, new quality radiopharmaceutical medicines need to be developed. “Chelyabinsk region would not be able to do it on its own. Without Rosatom, we wouldn’t have been included into the federal program”, Pavel Ryzhiy, the deputy governor of Chelyabinsk region, said.
The regional authorities will start working on specific proposals on development of nuclear medicine in the Federal Nuclear Center this week. The federal government will examine the proposals in March 2012.
The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM incorporates more than 250 enterprises and scientific institutions, including all civil nuclear companies of Russia, nuclear weapons complex’s facilities, research organizations and the world’s only nuclear-propelled fleet. ROSATOM is the largest utility in Russia which produces more than 40 % of electricity in the country’s European part.
ROSATOM holds leading positions in the world market of nuclear technologies being the 1-st in the world simultaneous nuclear build abroad; 2-nd in uranium reserves and 5-th in uranium mining; 4-th in nuclear electricity generation, while providing 40% of the world uranium enrichment services and 17% of the world nuclear fuel market.
ROSATOM is also tasked to fulfill Russia's international obligations in the field of the peaceful uses of atomic energy and nuclear nonproliferation regime.
