Russian developers smarten up separate waste collection

2 Jul '21
Russia has developed a smart container for separate waste collection. The device will make a comment if the wrong type of waste is put in it and will thank for the correct one. The novelty is going to be presented in late July - early August in Veliky Novgorod at the Archipelago 2121 intensive, the press service of the National Technology Initiative Platform (NTI) reported.

The container was developed and created by specialists from the Crimean Federal University named after V.I. Vernadsky. As explained by the participant of the Archipelago 2121, associate professor of the Department of Radiophysics and Electronics of the Physics and Technology Institute of the Crimean Federal University named after V.I. Vernadsky Dmitry Poletaev, the patent for the innovative container was received back in 2018. There is already a mock-up of the device, and a functional prototype can be ready within a week.

He clarified that it is planned to determine the type of garbage (plastic, metal, paper, glass) using electromagnetic and capacitive sensors. The design of the smart container is autonomous - energy is accumulated in batteries when charged from solar panels during daylight hours, messages to users are issued by a loudspeaker device. It will be possible to record both an appeal to the user (indignant or grateful) and music (joyful or harsh).

Last year, a container using artificial intelligence was developed in Canada, but the Western device is ten times more expensive than the Russian one (on average 50 thousand rubles instead of 2 thousand for the one developed in the Russian Federation), it distinguishes only undeformed waste - if you crumple a cup of coffee, it will not recognize it and will not react in any way. Plus, the foreign container has a slight vandal resistance and is only suitable for showrooms, where it is operated under the supervision of security.

Earlier, in June, Russia proposed to ban a number of items from circulation, such as packs of cigarettes and tubes for pasta; a list of 28 items was prepared by the Russian Ecological Operator. It was noted that these wastes are not removed from the general waste stream during the accumulation stage, as well as during the sorting process at processing plants. The ban provides for their replacement with an alternative, which will reduce the volume of waste that is sent to landfills.
