Volgograd region to develop pharmacology, medicine and biotechnologies

Administration of Volgograd region, Russian pharmaceuticals distributor SIA International LTD and Tsaritsyn Capital have signed an agreement on cooperation on issues of development pharmaceutical, medical and biotechnological industries in the region, website i-russia.ru reports.

The agreement is to establish basis for public-private partnership on the issues of development of pharmaceutical, medical and biotechnological industries in Volgograd region, raise investment into development of national pharmaceutical products and medical technologies.

“Unfortunately, in the recent years we’ve been seeing pushing out of national medicines from the market and their replacement with imported analogues. Our goal is to change this situation, apply efforts to restore pharmaceutical, medical and biotechnological industry and, as a result, significantly improve situation with medicine provision in the Russian Federation by the domestic innovative medicines,” Anatoly Brovko, the Governor of Volgograd region, said.

In January the idea to create a pharmacological cluster in Volgograd region was supported by Tatyana Golikova, the Minister of Healthcare and Social Development of the RF. Since then, the regional administration and the Volgograd State Medical University have done big job in developing the cluster concept, as well as searching for partners and investors. The governor believes, that this agreement is an important step in bringing the project to life.

According to Igor Rudinsky, the director generatl of SIA International, “the value of the project of the pharmacological cluster in Volgograd region is that there are people willing to realize it”. Volgograd pharmacologists occupy leading positions in Russia in the field of training science personnel, creating new original medicines, developing fundamental pharmacology.

Under the agreement, by the end of 2011 the parties are to start working on the project of building the first pharmaceutical plant in the region. Investment in the project at the first stage is to estimated at $50m.
