Irkutsk authorities have launched an innovative project to install Wi-Fi Internet network in public transport, the reports.
Equipment, providing free access to Internet, has been installed in two trolley-buses under numbers 1 and 4, and two trams, routes 1 and 4.
According to Aleksander Gruk, the deputy director general of municipal transportation company Irkutskgorelectrotrans, these routes were chosen for their popularity among students. Trolley-buses and trams with free Wi-Fi Internet access, will have green marking on the side, as well as related information of free zone availability.
“Modern person needs to constantly stay in the information flow, in the office, at home and on the way, no time can be wasted. With Wi-Fi, we will be able to provide constant access to Internet, make these services accessible for population. This is especially needed at long routes that become even longer due to traffic jams and weather conditions,” Aleksander Sgrebny, the director of Irkutsk regional branch of MegaFon said.
Irkutsk region official believe that in the nearest future the city of Irkutsk will become one of the first cities in the country that will have tested innovative possibilities of Internet access in urban transport. Under plans, all urban trams and trolley-buses will be equipped with Wi-Fi points.
“I am sure that the first experience of new technologies will be a successful one, and will make using public transport more comfortable. I think that in a year Wi-Fi in trams and trolley-buses a usual service,” Aleksander Gruk added.
