Rosatom’s multi-billion-dollar radiative waste disposal announced

State corporation Rosatom has announced plans to set up a laboratory to research possibility of building a facility to dispose of highly active radiative wastes in Krasnoyarsk region.

The lab is reportedly to be set up at the depth of 600-700 meters.

The lab is scheduled to start working in 2015 and for another ten years research the possibility of locating at that site of a facility to provide final disposal of highly active radiative wastes.

To date there are 500 million cubic meters of radio-active wastes accumulated in Russia.

Total investment in the project has yet to be estimated, but, according to foreign practice, investment may come in at tens of billions of dollars.
