Minsk Automobile Plant opts for GAZ-built engines

28 May '08
Minsk Automobile Plant in Belarus has opted to use engines built by Nizhny Novgorod's GAZ in production of its new line of trucks.

The YaMZ-650 engines were designed by the truck division of French auto giant Renault and developed by GAZ in accordance with Euro-3 and Euro-4 standards.

GAZ paid a reported $94.4m for the license from Renault - lower than most analysts had predicted - after the firm's buy-out by Swedish Volvo
meant it no longer used them in its own trucks.

Volvo was reported to regret the deal later after the engines faired positively in ecological trials.

The YaMZ-650 engines are manufactured at the Yaroslavl Motor Plant, an affiliate of GAZ.
