General Electric to open R&D center in Skolkovo

An agreement on opening the General Electric corporation’s science and research center in the Skolkovo innovation center was signed in Moscow yesterday, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.
Jeffrey Immelt, the chairman and the CEO of the corporation commented on the agreement: “We are happy to contribute to Russia’s efforts to pit its national economy on the innovation rails, and we are happy to continue our cooperation in this field that started many decades ago. The agreement on Skolkovo confirms the importance of Russia as a strategic partner and our commitment to become closer to the Russian partners.”
Under plans, the GE science and research center is to have 50 science specialists engaged in research within the center cluster’s fields, primarily the sectors of energy efficiency, healthcare and information technologies.
“Russian is known to the world by its outstanding science schools and discoveries. And we are confidents that the new R&D center in Skolkovo is to form a perfect platform for transferring Russian scientific potential into real business-projects that will promote development of modern innovation economy and new jobs in the high technology sector,” – Jeffrey Immelt added.
Viktor Vekselberg, told the ITARTASS reporter, that opening the GE center in Skolkovo does not imply transfer of technologies. “We don’t demand technologies from General Electric. We will promote commercialization of the ideas developed in the center,” – he said.
While Jeffrey Immelt noticed: “General Electric respects Russia’s technological achievements. We have received the platform, the base, where we can make investment using Russian science and technology potential.”
According to Jeffrey Immelt, in the same events series are opening of the Energy Technologies Center in Kaluga in October 2010 and GE’s Healthcare Academy training-center, launched in Moscow earlier, that create perfect opportunities for education and innovation development.
