New Moscow electron accelerator to help ensure safety of nuclear reactors

Experts in electron accelerators at Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) have developed and tested a new electron accelerator for radiation flaw detection, a system that is expected to help check the quality of welded seams in nuclear reactors, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.
Welded seams are vital to the overall strength of a nuclear reactor casing. They are the first to deteriorate as the system keeps emitting strong neutron radiation.
According to MSU’s Skobeltsyn Research Institute of Nuclear Physics, the technical parameters of the new accelerator “exceed those of its international analogs.”
At the moment, the scientists are preparing to deliver the accelerator to their customer, ZiO-Podolsk, a sizable manufacturer of heat exchange equipment for energy-related industries based in Podolsk outside Moscow.
